Norway: Reindeer exploitation

Ruadan’s undercover investigation in 2005 into the  slaughter of reindeer in Norway resulted in a Sami herder being found guilty by the Supreme Court of infringing the Animal Welfare Act.

The traditional method involves inserting a knife directly into a reindeer’s heart but the law states that animals must be unconscious before death to avoid unnecessary suffering. The herder, who pleaded innocence on the grounds that it was an age old tradition, was fined 5000 NOK (570 euros).
